Divorce is known to be a major life changing event which is often associated with a wide range of negative psychological impacts such as depression, anxiety, lower life satisfaction and high levels of stress. It can also lead to attempts at coping aimed at distracting from the pain and escaping from the stress, but which can create further problems, such as reliance on drinking, over eating and over spending.
The period during the legal divorce through to the first two years afterwards is particularly the time of most acute stress when rapid changes in life circumstances, the loss of familiarity and changes in self-image strongly test individuals’ ability to cope and adjust.
But this period of time also offers a window of change too. A point in time when we can be most open to change and new ways of looking at our situation to find new ways of doing things.
